What does it mean to receive a really good massage service? One that is ethically sound?

Unfortunately, because of a lack of awareness, training, and often clear communication, unfortunate experiences have happened for many people who receive massage therapy.

This has created some misunderstandings of what is a good massage.

Sometimes I’ll hear from clients who say, “Oh, I don’t really like getting massaged, it just hurts too much.” And that just hurts my heart because massage should never hurt.

Guidelines for a great massage therapy session:

  • Importance of Communication: Clients should express their preferences, discomfort, and desired pressure levels. Therapists are trained to adjust techniques based on feedback.
  • Pain-Free Massage: A good massage should never cause pain. Therapists aim to relax the nervous system, not overstimulate it.
  • Customization and Safety: Each session begins with a review of the client’s medical history, current condition, and goals. Techniques like gua sha or hot stones are used only with informed consent.
  • Professional Boundaries: Ethical massage practices adhere to strict laws, including proper draping, avoiding private areas, and maintaining professionalism.
  • Role of Therapists: Therapists prioritize client comfort by adjusting pressure, temperature, and other session factors.
  • Warning Against Unethical Practices: Clients are advised to seek licensed, experienced professionals and report unsafe or unethical behavior.
